What are you defining as ';pays a lot?'; In general psychotherapists and MFT's make a decent living, but in relative terms they don't get paid a lot.
The best way to become a MFT is to go to school and get a degree in MFT. There is a professional association http://www.aamft.org/
Other pathways include MA in counseling, counseling psych, educational psych, and of course PhD in any of these fields.

A master's degree (or a Ph.D.) in psychology (clinical or counseling) would get you there, as well.
