Why is gay marriage legal in South Africa?

And its basically illegal to be gay in the rest of Africa?

Talk about the odd one out.Why is gay marriage legal in South Africa?
Yeah, it is surprising. I haven't been to South Africa, so I am not sure what the society is like there, but I do understand that there are some progressive elements there and in some ways very modern.

Unfortunately, in other African countries it is illegal and in some cases the penalty is death. I think this has something to do with cultural conservatism in these countries and also sometimes religion. South Africa is much more diverse and there is separation of Church and State.

Of course, South Africa has a checkered past with apartheid as well, but is turning out to be a leader in gay rights. I still think it wouldn't be safe to be openly gay in many parts of SA, because conservative elements exist outside of progressive urban centres. Why is gay marriage legal in South Africa?
I love how America always looks down upon Africa for other reasons, when they're obviously a more accepting place than we are in terms of basic human rights. We haven't even gotten that far; the fraction of gay marriage being legal in this country is absolutely miniscule.

Big-a*s Canada has all of it's parts legalized.

And South Africa + many other ';smaller'; countries.

Now, that's just embarassing.

Go, South Africa.
Because even with all the social problems they have... STILL they can be intelligent and open enough to understand that there is nothing wrong about homosexuality and there is no single good reason for gay marriage not to be accepted as a part of our contemporary world.

America should learn some precious lessons from countries like South Africa, Sweden, The Netherlands and Spain.
South Africa is more civilized. To a point!
