Why are so many people against same-sex marriage?

I'm bisexual. I am in a committed romantic relationship with another girl. She was my best friend for many years and now she's my significant other. I think I might eventually marry her, but I'm not planning that far ahead yet. I'm not interested in any guys. When I date guys I only use them for sex. If I decide to marry her, or another girl, shouldn't I be allowed to? Why do so many people want to make that illegal? Why are so many people against same-sex marriage?
Because most people do not understand and some do not want to understand the differences between people. Also, they have someone else think for them and influence their judgment. Why are so many people against same-sex marriage?
Because it is not a marriage, which by definition is a union between a man and a woman.
You claim that you're in a committed relationship but go on to say that when you date guys, you only use them for sex. I fail to see how this shows you have the emotional maturity needed to enter into a long term arrangement like marriage. In spite of the divorce rate, they commonly last a lifetime.
they are unproductive
In their minds, they're living in another century where everything was suppressed, especially women. Put yourself in their mental chaps and bloomers and you'll see they are afraid of change because they think they'll lose the right to own everything you have. The Republicans love when people respond to questions like yours (especially when they're phony) because it gets people thinking -- ';Hey, better'd vote Republican.';
You can do what you want privately, but the gov't should not be sanctioning it. There's never been such a thing as gay ';marriage,'; and there never can be. It just doesn't exist. A rhinoceros isn't a telephone, no matter what you'd like to call it.
It's being debated - some are for some are against. Why so blue panda-bear?

A long-held institution, which marriage is, is worthy of discussion before changing, in my opinion.

Best wishes,

pup
Simple it's wrong.. marriage is a sacred union between man and woman..eve and adam not eve and jill.. adam and eve not adam and steve... U people make me sick.....
i think you should not be allowed to date your girlfriend because that is two females that i do not have a chance to make out with. i mean why make it legal for two women to live with each other and cut the men out of all that sex?
Sounds like if and when you do marry your girl-friend, she will be able to sue you for divorce on grounds of adultery.

Why in the world would you want to get married?

Perversely, I could wish upon homosexuals their wish for marriage. The divorce courts are so jammed up now, they will come to a screeching halt if we give marriage to gays.
I am a male and a lesbian I just love women
I don't understand why anybody cares what you do privately. Love and how you express it is nobody's business but your own.
My 2 dads are gay but same sex relationships are DEVIANT and unnatural.

It goes against religion and creation. Ther would not be any procreation if being a homo was okay.
Because it doesn't produce little taxpayers...

... and because you never let us guys join in.

Just kidding, I kewl wit it... and it doesn't do anything for me to watch unless I'm involved, so there :P
No, you shouldn't be allowed to marry someone of the same sex. Marriage is defined by law in most states as 1 man and 1 woman...so to even say that same-sex couples can enter a ';marriage'; is illogical. They don't meet 2 of the basic components that make up the relationship.

Can they have a quasi-marriage relationship that is just like the original but different? Yes. But let's not forget, a same-sex relationship is different than a heterosexual relationship...being different isn't bad, it's accepting who you are and accepting that you don't fit that traditional marriage law. Attempting to fool society that same-sex marriage would be equivalent to real marriage could be harmful to society as a whole. You would be changing the definition of the core foundation of society...the family.

The law isn't necessarily bad, just because people fall outside the constructs of the law. The people aren't bad because they can't get married. They've accepted a part of their life that doesn't meet the requirements to be married in our society.

That would be equivilant to a white man demanding that he be able to have his home be recognized as an native-American reservation, the white man would have to understand that even though he's never known another country as his home, the term native-American means something much different than what he believes it to mean.
Because it is wrong and not how people are supposed to be. If you two were meant to be together, one of you would have been born with a dick.
Less and less people are over time, actually. A decade ago 90+% of us were against gay marriage. Two years ago 60+% were. Now just over half of us are. In 2008 those who oppose gay marriage will be in the minority.

You will remember that since Bush won reelection in 2004 largely by energizing religious wackos to come out and bash the queers that NO bill or amendment banning gay marriage has been introduced. In that time Connecticut has allowed civil unions and you're about to see civil unions happen in New Jersey. Gay marriage is a scare tactic, along with abortion, that the GOP uses to get the hayseed rubes out to polls.
i will not judge you. I think that you and your significant other (girlfriend) should be able to enter into a civil union that afford you and her all the same rights as a married couple. I believe that marriage is for heterosexuals and civil unions for same sex (homosexual) couples.
maybe their afraid their gay too
Many people, such as myself, are not against unions. But to classify them as a marriage, is wrong in our opinion. First of all, the definition of marriage stipulates man and womah. If we start to change the definition, then what will stop someone from marrying a rabbit, and taking tax deductions for the offspring of the rabbit?
Rejecting any religious reasons..,how about nature..,isnt there a male and female of each plant and animal? Can you reproduce with two of the same sexes? If that doesnt answer your question, then marriage is a SACRED union between a man and a woman. The dictionary says that.No judging you,but stop shoving your sex life in our faces. We're getting sick of it.We dont care what you do behind closed doors but your sex life as with anyone elses sex life needs to be left in your house. If you want to marry for benefits, work a job where you can get them.Am I bitter, yes, you people have pushed your agenda on teaching your sex lives to elementary children and pushed us to tolerate your kind.Where is the tolerance for what we believe and how we want to raise our children without being exposed to your sexual preference. If your sex life isnt sacred enough to be kept in the privacy of your home, why should we think marriage would be sacred to you?
I think they are against un-natural sex between to same sex partners. You see, to most people, marriage is a special commitment between a man and a woman.

If we allow same sex marriage, just because these people have a different sexual preference than heterosexuals do, whats to stop the pedophiles, the animal lovers and the real sick people from pushing to allow their type of sexual preference as a marriage.

Timmy and Lassie married??? Don't think so.
Sounds to me like you are more of a lesbian than a Bi....

I usually like most Bi women...
I don't know why they are.... I'm not one of them.

If people want to make their relationships legal they should be able to.

If they take your taxes you should be able to participate fully in the system.
I have no idea... they talk about how marriage is this and that...man and women.. blah blah blah...... they are afriad of something....I dont know what though
The answer is really very simple. As kids we are raised on a certain diet. In the mid west it tends to be meat and potato's so we grow to love and accept these foods as the way we, and others, should eat. It becomes difficult for people raised on one diet to willing try another. That's why escargot is not considered a major food item in the Midwest even though it is extremely tasty. Close mindedness is the issue. Americans up to this point were primarily raised in 2 parent family's consisting of a man and a woman. That is they're diet. Just as an increased availability of different foods has expanded the diet of regions over time so to will the emergence of single parent and same sex parents alter the makeup of our social diet. In 20 to 30 years, people will no longer even blink at same sex marriage. However, you are in the sad position of being the trend setter. Good Luck
A lot of people will tell you it is morally wrong; those morals being the ones set forth in the Bible. Or they are simply uncomfortable with it and think it is ';unnatural';. The bottom line, though, is that morality is ultimately subjective (as is the meaning of faith), and that seems to be something a lot of people are choosing to ignore or failing to recognize altogether. I personally have no problem with gay marriage -I'm just happy to see two people find each other.
We shouldn't accept such vile behavior in a civilized society.Homosexuality is the act of animals.
It's a campaign tool to rally the religious nuts, nothing more, nothing less.
It is still perceived as a deviant behavior.
Ask Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno.
