Is this true? If so, then how many states have same sex civil unions? Are civil unions already legal? And why are people trying to force churches to marry gays when it goes against their religion?What's the deal with gay marriage vs. civil unions?
The deal is inequality. Some States have Civil Unions and others don't. In some (if not all) of the States with Civil Unions, not all of the rights of Marriage are granted by the Civil Union...so it isn't even ';separate but equal';.
Besides, as another person has already noted, Civil Marriages between non-religious heterosexual partners are available in just about every State...the States do not officially recognize ';Marriage'; as a religious ceremony (nor should they, as that would violate the principal of separation of Church and State.
A Church has the right to refuse to marry anyone (as Churches are private entities). However, a Civil Marriage (conveying all legal rights of Marriage) should be available to homosexual couples as well as heterosexual couples. Homosexuals should not be discriminated against by being offered a lesser form of union than a Marriage...but that's exactly what's being done in some States.What's the deal with gay marriage vs. civil unions?
The problem is that most states do not grant the same rights to those who have a civil union. This is of the states that actually allow civil union of course.
Marriage grants more than a thousand rights to the partners, civil union grants something like 300 in most cases.
The deal is that the homosexual wants, and deserves to have the same rights bestowed upon them and their chosen partners as the heterosexual community has.
It's about equality.
Civil unions are recognized by some states only. And no one is forcing churches to marry gays, you've been mislead. Marriage is not a tradition that belongs to the church. Aetheists can get married so are they violating religion since they don;t have one? No. The religious right need to get over themseleves. They need a serious reality check. They do not own the word marriage.
Because homosexuality isn't against gay peoples' religion. Believe it or not, there are a lot of religious homosexuals. Contradiction, you say? Well then, any married woman who cuts her hair, any woman who wears pants, or . . . There's tons of things we do on a daily basis that go against the bible.
The most quoted passage against homosexuality says
';Man shall not lie with a man as he lies with a woman, for that is an abomination.';
Doesn't that mean ';Men who lie with women shall not lie with men.';
Gay men don't lie with women. If the bible was speaking against homosexuality, wouldn't it just say ';Man shall not lie with man?'; Sure, fancy wording and everything, but it'd be interpreted as meaning sex, not just sleeping next to.
The bible says that heterosexual men must not have sex with other men. Why? Because they'd be doing it out of lust. Sex out of lust is considered a sin. Sex is meant to be a part of *love* relationships. Heterosexual men do not *love* other men. They *love* women. Having sex with a man just to get your rocks off is the same as having sex with a prostitute.

Anyway, I think people are backing off of ';it's not a civil union, it's a marriage'; more and more as people start to see the two as being equal. A few years ago, it kind of seemed like segregation - civil unions would never be on the same level, socially, as marriages.
When I get married, whether anyone likes it or not, I'm going to have a wife. I'm not going to introduce her as ';This is my life partner,'; or ';This is my house partner.'; No, I'm going to say ';This is my wife.'; Mrs. and Mrs. . .
teehee.
Well, I plan on being a doctor (of psychology) so it'd be Dr. and Mrs.
TEEHEE.
And when we get married, I hope we'll both be wearing pretty white dresses. Or, well, I'm sure as hell wearing a dress.
